WASHINGTON—The American Dental Education Association’s (ADEA) well-regarded Summer Program for Emerging Academic Leaders will be held July 12-15, 2012, at the Meadowmere Resort in Ogunquit, Maine. Registration is open for this highly interactive program geared toward new faculty in allied, advanced, and predoctoral dental education.

Many current leaders in academic dentistry are alumni of the program, formerly named the Summer Program Career Development for Faculty Leaders: An Immersion Workshop. Most alumni of this program fondly remember the “Ogunquit Experience,” including Sandra C. Andrieu, M.Ed., Ph.D., Professor and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry (LSUSD) and a past President of ADEA.

“The Summer Program was a powerful experience that came at a pivotal point in my career,” says Dr. Andrieu. “What I learned at the meeting had a lasting impact on my career, and the participants continue to be an important part of my professional network,” she adds. Dr. Andrieu has been a dental educator for more than 30 years, beginning her career as a dental hygiene faculty member at LSUSD, where she would become the first—and remains the only—female to serve as an Associate Dean in the dental school.

ADEA has recreated and refreshed this popular program for junior faculty members who want to plan and implement a successful academic career, most of whom are coming from residency or private practice. This three-and-a-half day program covers topics such as leadership styles, team building and time management; lectures, small group discussions, and independent exercises immerse participants in content to develop skills essential for success in higher education.

Participants can expect to focus on current major trends and topics in academic dentistry, develop leadership competencies, plan their own career trajectories, discover leadership and professional development opportunities, and expand professional networks of colleagues and mentors. With the help of several select alumni from the ADEA Leadership Institute to moderate and participate in discussions, they will learn about the nature of academic dental institutions and how to work successfully within a school’s culture.

The presenters at the program represent the best of the medical and dental professions, having all spent more than a decade as faculty members. They include:
• Clyde H. Evans, Ph.D., Senior Consultant, Academy for Academic Leadership was vice president at the Association of Academic Health Centers 1998-2005. Previously, he spent 13 years at Harvard Medical School as a member of the faculty, Director of the Office for Academic Careers, and Associate Dean for Clinical Affairs.
• Paula N. O’Neill, M.Ed., Ed.D., has been a leader in health science education for more than 27 years. She is a tenured professor of Diagnostic Sciences and Associate Dean for Professional Development and Faculty Affairs at The University of Texas School of Dentistry at Houston.
•Tobias E. Rodriguez, Ph.D., serves as Vice President for Education, Academy for Academic Leadership (AAL). Prior to joining AAL, Dr. Rodriguez served as a faculty member at the Louisiana State University School of Dentistry, where he directed numerous courses and oversaw the student research efforts at the school.

While face-to-face instruction ends on July 15, the collaborative learning experience will continue throughout 2012-2013 via quarterly video conferences offered throughout the year. In addition, attendees are eligible to earn a total of 30 continuing education (CE) credits for participation in the program and the required post-program quarterly webinar sessions.

The registration is available until June 19, 2012. Registration is open to all, including ADEA members and nonmembers; fees include all instructional materials, hosted meals, refreshment breaks, and receptions. Travel and lodging costs are not included. For more information about the program, cancellation fees and registration instructions, visit www.adea.org/adeasummer.
