Planmeca and CephX Technologies LTD have announced the launch of an automatic cephalometric tracing and analysis service for the Planmeca Romexis dental imaging software. The service uses CephX’s AlgoCeph algorithm, an application of artificial intelligence and machine learning technology based on thousands of manually traced cephalometric images.

The integration of AlgoCeph into the Planmeca Romexis software is designed to dramatically streamline orthodontic practitioners’ work. After image capturing in the software is completed, an automatic celphalometric analysis can be ordered with a few clicks and received in seconds. The service also can be used directly online from a dedicated website designed for Planmeca users who have yet to upgrade to Planmeca Romexis software version 4.6.

“Machine learning technology has tremendous potential in the world of radiology,” said Ville Salonen, product manager with Planmeca digital imaging and applications. “We are very excited to help users of our products save time and focus on patient treatment by offering them access to such a pioneering service. The future of orthodontics is now just one click away.”

Dentists and orthodontists commonly use cephalometric analysis to study skeletal relationships in the craniofacial complex. It also can be used to predict future changes, monitor the success of ongoing treatment plans, evaluate dentofacial proportions, and assist doctors in recognizing abnormalities. According to the companies, that’s why cephalometric analysis is crucial in developing and evaluating proper treatment plans for patients.

The challenge, the companies report, has been to provide analyses reliably and cost effectively as patient expectations increase and market competition grows. The AlgoCeph algorithm is designed to save time for practitioners, reduce human error, and contribute to better efficiency and improved patient handling from the first appointment.

Plus, rather than spending valuable time on training, supporting, and monitoring the work of others, practitioners can rely on sophisticated software drawing on one of the largest cephalometric databases in the world and focus on the value-generating throughput of patients, according to the companies.

“The world of orthodontics is evolving rapidly, as it provides patients continuous improvements in care. Our first priority has always been to help practitioners focus on that, providing them with peace of mind regarding their cephalometric analyses,” said Daniel Abraham, chair of CephX Technologies LTD.
