Enabled with Wi-Fi, the SMARTmirror sends images and video in real time to connected tablets, enabling dental professionals and patients alike to see inside the patient’s mouth during exams and procedures. It is similar in size and weight to a standard dental mirror, OmniVision reports, due to the company’s OVM6946 CameraCubeChip wafer-level camera module. Its sapphire mirror provides 12x magnification and won’t scratch or fog up like a standard mirror, and its 36 integrated LEDs with adjustable intensity provide brighter illumination when needed.

“We tell dentists that the SMARTmirror changes everything by putting their eyes in the mouth of the patient, removing the anxiety many patients feel when they can’t see what is happening,” said SMARTmirror CEO Dan Harkabi.

The OVM6946 camera module is built on OmniVision’s OmniBSI+ pixel architecture and can capture 400-by-400 resolution video at 30 frames per second, providing a 120° diagonal field of view and a focusing range of 3 mm to infinity. The module measures 1.05 by 1.05 by 2.27 mm, which makes it small enough to be embedded in the 4-mm thick SMARTmirror. The camera is invisible to the user, and dentists and hygienists don’t need any additional training to use it.

Currently in pilot testing with 200 dentists with more than 2,000 inspections and procedures performed so far, the SMARTmirror will be available in mass production in the second quarter of 2019.
