April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month

It’s time, once again, for our profession to be reminded of the importance of focusing awareness, training, and action on the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of oral cancer. An informative Viewpoint article by Jo-Anne Jones has been selected for Oral Cancer Awareness month. Jones is a dental hygienist and frequent contributor on the topic of oral cancer. On a sober note, Jones was informed recently that one of her family members was diagnosed with late stage HPV-positive tonsillar cancer while preparing to present her extensive research on HPV-related oropharyngeal cancer. Oral cancer and other related head and neck cancers continue to haunt the profession with statistics that seem almost surreal, especially given our present-day knowledge and supposed abilities to better prevent, diagnose, and successfully treat so many other human diseases. What can, and what will, every dentist immediately do better or differently to finally help stem the repetitive tide of grim oral cancer statistics?

Additionally, we have another great lineup of clinical articles by leading clinician authors this month. Especially noteworthy is our cover-featured author, Dr. Carlos Spironelli Ramos, a highly respected expert in the field of endodontics. As he mentions in his article, to increase endodontic success, “…it is vital to discuss contemporary endodontic procedures, techniques, devices, instruments, and materials that have been adopted by endodontists alongside an intuitive, streamlined technique that can be incorporated by GPs.” This statement is reflective of the essence and direction of the content of this and other future articles that Dr. Ramos will be submitting to Dentistry Today.

Throughout 2018, a special spotlight will be focused on our peer-reviewed CE selections. These articles are a convenient way for our clinician readers to obtain at least some of the required CE credits for re-licensure. In this issue, Dr. G. Richard Young demonstrates a technique and discussion involving the supraperiosteal envelope technique for the treatment of gingival recession in our CE selection available for 2 FAGD/MAGD CEUs.

Please enjoy yet another exciting issue of Dentistry Today!
