Delta Dental of California announced its termination of chief executive officer Tony Barth on October 19. The company’s board of directors said the termination was the result of Barth’s engaging in, and failure to report, a relationship with a subordinate employee.

Chief financial officer Mike Castro will be the acting CEO. Serving with Castro will be board member Steven McCann, who will serve as special advisor to the CEO, and chief human resources officer Sarah Chavarria. A formal search process is currently underway to establish a permanent CEO. The newly established Office of the CEO will report to the board and have oversight over all company operations during the transition.

“Delta Dental’s culture is based on a strong set of ethics and values, including trust, service, excellence, and innovation,” said Lynn Franzoi, chair of the board of directors. “As one of the nation’s largest dental benefits providers, these values are vital to our culture, guide how we operate and treat one another, and are essential to our future success.”
