Clinic and Research Day at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) College of Dentistry was postponed because of the nationwide snowstorm on Feb. 2. It has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 10, 2011.
For the 24th year the College, located at 801 S. Paulina St., will take on the appearance of a national dental meeting all day, as the event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and focus on student research presentations, Critically Appraised Topic competitions based on actual cases, and an internationally known keynote speaker.
The theme of Clinic and Research Day this year is “Oral and Systemic Diseases,” and stems from the title of the talk to be given by keynote speaker Dr. Jeffrey Ebersole, the Alvin L. Morris Professor of Oral Health Research, Director of the Center for Oral Health Research, and Associate Dean for Research at the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry. He will speak on “Salivary Biodiagnostics in Oral and Systemic Diseases.”
“Our students and fellows are presenting more than 95 posters highlighting their current research,” said Dr. Phillip T. Marucha, Associate Dean for Research at the UIC College of Dentistry. “They cover a wide range of topics in the basic, behavioral, clinical, and applied sciences. Predoctoral, postgraduate, and graduate students; postdoctoral fellows; and their faculty mentors will be competing for awards in a number of categories.”
At the UIC College of Dentistry faculty, postgraduates, and students conduct a wide range of research activities, from basic research, public health and prevention, and the development of best practices in dentistry, to the creation of techniques and technology that will allow teeth to be regenerated in adults. Research occurs at the College from the ‘bench to the bedside’—from the laboratory to treatment of patients. Clinic and Research Day allows the postgraduates, students, and their faculty mentors to share their research with the dental and medical communities.
Also featured will be “CaseCAT” (Critically Appraised Topic) competitions, featuring actual cases that exemplify aspects of dentistry combined with critically appraised topics that summarize individual research.
“There will be dental products and services vendors’ exhibits and events planned just for fun, too," Dr. Marucha continued. “Dentists, students, other medical personnel, and those interested in research and vendors’ exhibits are welcome.”
Events will wrap up with presentations of awards in a variety of categories.
Continuing Education credit will be awarded for attending a selected number of poster presentations and the keynote presentation. For additional information about CE or about the Clinic and Research Day event, contact Katherine Long, Office of the Associate Dean for Research, at longka@uic.edu.
