Specialist business property advisor, Christie & Co, has announced the sale of Belhaven Dental Surgery in Port Glasgow, Inverclyde, on behalf of its esteemed owners, Catherine and Colin Jones.

Originally situated in a vacant dental building, Belhaven Dental Surgery was established as a two-surgery squat practice in 2005. The aim in the first year was to register 1,500 patients; however, within 11 months, it exceeded expectations and quickly developed a patient list of over 3,000. With the practice growing rapidly, there was a need to extend surgery capacity to fulfill patient demand. Soon after, four surgeries were in place with a full complement of clinicians, including three dentists, two hygienists, and six support staff.

As the business continued to develop, focus was placed on staff development and upskilling, resulting in the practice being one of the first to successfully embrace the Childsmile programme.

In 2015, to further facilitate growth, Catherine moved the practice to its current location within Scarlow House Business Centre—a former council building that was being fully refurbished. Catherine’s husband, Colin, also joined the business as Practice Manager and was not only instrumental in assisting with the renovations but has been integral to the overall growth of the practice. Today, the site offers a substantial and well-presented fully equipped, five-surgery practice with dedicated car parking and excellent transport links servicing the circa 11,000 patients from across Port Glasgow, Kilmacolm, Gourock, and Langbank.

After nearly two decades of success, the sale has provided Catherine and Colin with the opportunity to redirect their attention away from ownership. Catherine will continue in a clinical and Vocational Training capacity while Colin will operate at head office level, allowing them to spend more time with their family.

The practice has been purchased by a large Scottish group.

“I wanted to be absolutely sure that selling at this time was right for us as a family but also a good thing for my staff,” commented Catherine Jones, founder of Belhaven Dental Surgery. “We were fortunate to have good interest in the practice and the final sale terms were better than I had expected. I am delighted with how things went—we feel we had excellent guidance throughout the process and are both very happy with our new position as Associate and employee!”

“Collaborating closely with Colin and Catherine Jones in the sale of Belhaven Dental Surgery has been a truly satisfying journey,” commented Joel Mannix, associate director of dental at Christie & Co, who handled the sale. “The dedication and hard work shown yielded tangible results in the form of multiple offers, each reflecting the genuine appeal and potential of Belhaven Dental Surgery. It is heartening to know that Colin and Catherine can now move forward with their next endeavours knowing that their legacy is in capable hands. As they transition into this new chapter, I am not only excited about the prospects for Belhaven Dental Surgery under its new leadership but also enthusiastic about the opportunity to maintain a strong connection with Colin and Catherine. Our partnership has not only been professional but has also forged a lasting friendship, and I look forward to witnessing the continued success and growth of this exceptional practice in the years to come.”

“In an increasingly challenging market environment, practices offering distinctive services stand out in the competitive landscape,” continued Mannix. “This makes it more important than ever to adopt a comprehensive ‘whole of market’ approach.”

Belhaven Dental Surgery was sold for an undisclosed price.
