Leadership: An Awesome Responsibility

This month we are showcasing professionals who are actively involved in helping others, each on their own unique path, to become the best that they can be. Please know that our 22nd Annual Leaders in Continuing Education directory is not intended to be an all-inclusive listing; there are many others worthy of appearing who are not on this short list of educators and consultants.

Vince Lombardi, a Hall of Fame coach who never had a losing season and led the Green Bay Packers to 2 Super Bowls in the 1960s, said, “Leaders are made, they are not born. They are made by hard effort, which is the price which all of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.”

Well, there is not a single leader in CE who does not know the value of hard work. With the duties of teaching and consulting comes awesome responsibilities, with countless hours of learning and preparation, and the dedication to develop effective communication skills.

The American politician, Bill Owens, said that “True leadership lies in guiding others to success. In ensuring that everyone is performing at their best, doing the work they are pledged to do and doing it well.” Leadership is about helping others achieve their loftiest goals. One simply cannot achieve all that is truly possible without inspiration and guidance from others. Remember that even our leaders likely did not always succeed in all that they attempted to do. Sometimes, humbly teaching others the lessons learned in failure can make the real difference in the lives of those who are open to listen.

President John F. Kennedy stated that “Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.” If one has a sincere desire to become a leader, that dream can be fulfilled. However, it will be realized only through education, training, experiencing relationships with others, living life to its fullest, and self-reflection. Then, once a leader, the work and learning never end!

On a newsworthy note, my dear friend and colleague, Dr. Michael Tischler, is stepping down in his position as the editor of the Implants Today section. The editorial team and I will definitely miss him! However, I am proud to announce that Dr. Timothy Kosinski is taking his place and we look forward to working with him beginning in 2020.

Happy Holidays to all!
