The Isolite Operating Room Adapter (ORA) by Zyris helps clinicians deliver gentle, efficient, and effective care in operating rooms like the one where Dr. Ana Vazquez of Fishers Pediatric Dentistry treats patients who need sedation.

Dr. Vazquez is the founder of Fishers Pediatric Dentistry in Fishers, Indiana, just outside of Indianapolis. It is a large, thriving practice serving thousands of patients, with a team of over 70 clinicians. Dr. Vazquez received her Doctor of Medicine degree at the University of Puerto Rico School of Medicine, her Certificate in Pediatric Dentistry at Indiana University School of Dentistry, and a Master of Business Administration from Northwestern University.
Dr. Vazquez has dedicated her career to ensuring that children have access to proper dental care, no matter their situation. She has observed a rising trend in tooth decay in children in the United States, which she attributes to:
- Delayed visits to a dentist
- Poor eating habits
- The fact that our behavior modification toolbox (which includes tell-show-do, distraction, positive reinforcement, nitrous oxide, parental presence, protective stabilization, etc.) is, in some circumstances, not enough to safely accomplish dental treatment
As a result, Dr. Vazquez concludes that the use of general anesthesia in an OR is often the safest and most efficient approach to dental treatment. She sees the incidence rate of OR visits increasing significantly for younger patients, which is why she believes clinicians need to be taught more sedation techniques in school. Her OR team includes a pediatric anesthesiologist, nurses, and staff, all in a facility designed for the following patients who often require procedures under general anesthesia:
- Medically compromised children
- Special needs adults and children
- Children with compliance issues
- Children who require far more work than can be done in the clinic without multiple sessions
With the help of the Isolite Operating Room Adapter, Dr. Vazquez successfully treated nine patients in seven hours, ages 2–8, with an average of eight crowns plus extractions. One patient treated had 18 cavities out of her total of 20 teeth!

Dr. Brian Compton (anesthesiologist) explains that when just throat packs and gauze are used, he sometimes needs to suction any water or fluid that leaks into the patient’s stomach (OG suction) before waking the patient. This ends up being an additional procedure. Dr. Compton recommends performing that procedure using isolation with suction because it is a much cheaper alternative.
Dr. Vazquez has two dental assistants in the OR at the same time. In Figure 2 above, you can see one assistant at the end of the bed with a laptop. As Dr. Vazquez completes a step of the procedure, she calls out what she has completed, and that assistant immediately logs the information into the billing and insurance system. Dr. Vazquez’s other assistant keeps a smooth flow of surgery.
In pediatric dentistry, where the primary focus is on delivering gentle, efficient, and effective care, technological advances play a crucial role. For over 20 years, clinicians have trusted Zyris Isolite to control the oral environment and keep their patients safe and comfortable.
Zyris Isolite is now bringing the same game-changing technology to sedation dentistry.
Maximize Your Time in the Operating Room with ORA
The new Operating Room Adapter (ORA) allows the use of the Isolite Posterior Mouthpiece in an operating room setting. The single-use adapter enables quick operating room turnover time by allowing everything from the vacuum canister to the mouthpiece to be disposed of.
The ORA works seamlessly with both the Isolite Posterior Mouthpiece and the new HOOPLA Retractor simultaneously, teaming up to provide the next level of isolation and retraction.
ORA is perfect for dental professionals who treat pediatric or special needs patients requiring general anesthesia for dental procedures.
