The SmartMouth suite of oral care rinses includes activated zinc to help fight the oral bacteria and inflammation associated with periodontitis, according to the company. Activated zinc ions also bind to oral bacteria and inhibit its ability to produce sulfur for 12 hours with every rinse, preventing bad breath, SmartMouth adds.

Plus, SmartMouth notes Mayo Clinic studies suggesting that oral bacteria and the inflammation associated with periodontitis may play a role in some diseases. Good oral hygiene including the use of mouth rinses to remove food particles left after brushing and flossing could have a positive impact on systemic health, the company says.

“Your body can affect your mouth and, likewise, your mouth can affect your body,” said Pamela McClain, DDS, president of the American Academy of Periodontology. “Taking good care of your teeth and gums can really help you live well longer.”

Plus, zinc can significantly reduce the duration of cold symptoms including cough, nasal discharge, and muscle aches when administered as a lozenge or syrup, SmartMouth says.
