The dentalcorp network of dental clinics has announced the winners of its inaugural national scholarship program, which was designed to support the next generation of oral healthcare professionals.

The dentalcorp Academic Excellence Award, the first of its kind in Canada, awards its recipients in their final year of study in dentistry, dental hygiene, and dental assisting programs at Canadian institutions with full tuition reimbursement and a multiyear contract at a dentalcorp practice. This year’s winners include:

  • Jona Szakacs, médicine dentaire, Western University
  • Bianka Bernath, dental hygienist, University of British Columbia
  • Raelynn Wickstrom, dental assistant, Camosun College

“We were overwhelmed with the number of applications we received and very impressed with the quality of the candidates,” said Guy Amini, dentalcorp president.

“With the uncertainty of today’s environment, particularly in dentistry, we are proud to support the selected recipients and are excited to welcome them into our practice network as they embark on their careers,” said Amini.

“As leaders in healthcare, we have an opportunity to recognize excellence and encourage continued learning and development as these graduates move from academics into practice,” Amini said.

Today’s students struggle to balance debt loads while seeking to start and develop their careers in a highly competitive market, all while facing the additional challenges arising from the pandemic, dentalcorp said.

“COVID-19 has significantly impacted financial and job certainty for many graduates, making this award more important than ever,” said Amini.

With the Academic Excellence Award, students can graduate debt-free and embark on a rewarding career path with a dentalcorp practice right away, the company said.

The dentalcorp Academic Excellence Award is an annual program available to all graduating students of Canadian accredited colleges or universities majoring in dental assisting, dental hygiene, or dentistry. Students can apply for the 2021 award beginning January 4, 2020.
