Cellerant Best of Class Technology Awards 2019
Paul Feuerstein, DMD
Earlier this year, the Cellerant committee met and voted on the Best of Class products of 2018 and a few that emerged in the first few months of 2019. There were several products that were previous winners and a few new innovations that have not been seen in dentistry before. The committee members talked with manufacturers, scoured dental meetings throughout the year, and sat through detailed presentations. Many of the products are evaluated in the members’ practices, providing more opportunities to take a close look at the claims that are made and the products’ advantages and disadvantages. They also polled their colleagues who have seen or used these products to get more feedback and even scoured online forums to try and get some feedback from the masses.
The newcomers looked at included artificial intelligence, digital articulating paper, total computer networking, software analysis of airways, and other products. Some of these new products are the only members of a class, while others are new and “emerging” technologies. An example of one of the repeat winners, the Shofu Eye Special C-III, is an improved version of the previous C-II, showing that these companies don’t rest on their laurels. And, in one class—digital impressions—the technology changes so dynamically that there were actually 2 winners.
As the committee was making its decisions, new products and processes were being introduced that are already under consideration for next year’s awards. This year’s winners will all be shown in the Dental Technology Expo at the upcoming ADA FDI World Dental Congress 2019 meeting in San Francisco this September.
