The nomination for this award was made because of Turner's development of the NOMAD Handheld X-ray System, which fills the need for a truly portable, lightweight dental x-ray. Thousands of NOMAD devices are now in use in the finest professional offices. Unlike the bulky wall-mount systems dentists traditionally used, the NOMAD x-ray is lightweight, rechargeable, and can go anywhere.
Dr. Turner's invention has also made access to dental care possible in countless remote humanitarian clinics around the world. Hundreds of thousands of people have benefited world-wide from improved dental care on these humanitarian missions. The device has been recognized as a runner-up in the Wall Street Journal technology innovation awards for 2010, and is rapidly becoming standard equipment in dental offices worldwide. Dr. Turner founded Aribex as a Utah corporation in 2003 to manufacture and market the device.
The Governor's Medal award program was initiated in 1987 to recognize those who have made achievements in the areas of Science and Technology. Nominations are solicited from four general categories: Academia, Science Education, Industry and Government. The Utah State Advisory Council on Science and Technology is responsible for administering the award and for recommending nominees to Governor Herbert.
Dr. Turner earned his B.S. in chemistry from Brigham Young University in 1985, and a Ph.D. in analytical chemistry from BYU in 1991. Following eight years in the semiconductor industry, he moved into 12 years of product management and business development with MOXTEK, a manufacturer of x-ray components, advancing to Chief Technology Officer. Turner developed several commercially-successful x-ray products, and worked on R&D development projects for both NASA and the European Space Agency prior to founding Aribex.
As a recognized expert in his field, Dr. Turner has published over 20 scientific papers and has been granted 7 US patents with several patent applications pending. He is active in the Utah business community, and is a trustee with the Utah Technology Council (UTC). In 2009 he was named by the UTC as the Emerging Executive of the year. He remains close to BYU by serving on the Volunteer Leadership Council for the College of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.
