Dr. Brown attended the University of Maryland and graduated from Georgetown University School of Dentistry in 1971. He served in the US Army Dental Corps at Ft. Huachuca, Ariz, and returned to the Washington, DC metro area in private practice in Northern Virginia and DC. He completed postdoctoral education in pharmacology and oral medicine at Georgetown University with an MS in 1988. Since then, he has had faculty positions at Georgetown University School of Dentistry and the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston, and presently at Georgetown University Medical Center, Howard University College of Dentistry (HUCD), and as a research associate at NHLBI/NIH, hematology division. He is also a professor of oral diagnosis at HUCD and the director of continuing dental education. His areas of research concern oral medicine, clinical trials, oral inflammatory diseases, and drug-induced gingival overgrowth. He is a reviewer for Journal of the American Dental Association, General Dentistry, Oral Diseases, Postgraduate Medicine, Oral Surgery, Oral Medicine, Oral Pathology, Oral Radiology & Endodontics, the Journal of Dental Education, and is also on the editorial board of Dentistry Today and Clinical, Cosmetic, Investigational Dentistry. He has more than 90 published journal articles, more than a dozen combined published books and book chapters, and has lectured and presented internationally. His mentors include Drs. William K. Bottomley, William T. Beaver, Samuel Dreizen, Jens J. Pindborg, and Sol Silverman, Jr. Dr. Brown is board certified by the American Board of Oral Medicine (ABOM), presently a member of the certifying directorship of the ABOM, and a past-president of the American Academy of Oral Medicine. He recently received the Abraham Reiner Stickpin Award, which is the lifetime achievement award within the field of oral medicine.
