Dr. Koerner graduated from the University of Washington, School of Dentistry and then completed a general practice residency in the US Army. With a master's degree in education, he is a former head of oral surgery at the Scottsdale Center in Scottsdale, Ariz, where he taught and coordinated the oral surgery curriculum. He is not an oral surgeon but learned oral surgery in the US Army and limits his private practice (located near Salt Lake City, Utah) to minor dentoalveolar surgery, including exodontia, ridge augmentation, and implant procedures. Dr. Koerner is past president of the Utah Dental Association and Utah AGD. He has been featured in several DVDs for the profession including 3 with Dr. Gordon Christensen on exodontia, third molar surgery, and medical emergencies. He is the author of many articles on various aspects of oral surgery and has authored or coauthored 4 books on oral surgery, including Color Atlas of Minor Oral Surgery (2nd edition, Mosby), and Manual of Minor Oral Surgery for the General Dentist (Blackwell). He is on the Clinical Research Associates Board of Directors and on the editorial boards for Dentistry Today, Clinician’s Report, and the Academy of General Dentistry Journal. Dr. Koerner has presented hundreds of didactic and participation oral surgery courses at international, national, and regional meetings and at the state level for many dental associations and AGD groups. He has received the Weclew Award, from the AGD for his contributions to general dentistry and dental education.
