Dr. Oakes graduated from Hanover College in 1969, then received his DDS and completed his general practice residency at the Indiana University (IU) School of Dentistry at the IU Medical Center. In 1974, he joined a practice in his hometown as an associate, and 2 years later started his own practice. In the 1980s he wrote a self-help book for dentists entitled The Winning Combination to help dentists create large, quality, profitable practices. In 1987, he founded Excellence in Dentistry, an information marketing company that publishes a magazine, has a CD interview of the month, a coaching club for dentists, does informative teleseminars and also presents national seminars each year. In the 1990s, he pioneered the field of digital radiography (filmless x-rays), now used in most modern dental offices. Dr. Oakes has written 17 books within the field of dentistry and has lectured across the United States and Canada.
